Art Class Update!

It's nearly Thursday again already so it's about time I shared my last work (21st feb) from the Thursday night drop-in drawing class. I usually post a few of my warm-up drawings alongside a completed sketch from a longer pose, but, well, they were rubbish so I'm not gonna share just in case someone comes along who hasn't seen this blog before it will scare them-I do try and look a bit professional.....:)

This one was ok in the end though-sometimes it just takes a bit longer to get going than others. There is one more class this week, then I will be left to my own devices for a while. Figure drawing is such a challenge when faced wiht a real person-I look forward to the next one. Even when the roughs are bad (like last week!) there is so much that one learns,it's a great buzz!
I will confess, the model was wearing a beautful silky red dress as shown, BUT it had a white pinstripe. With only 30 minutes to complete this pose, I used artistic licence and ignored the stripes!
Again, this is a fairly large piece of work (between A2 and A3) so will not fit the scanner, but it photographed ok,just a few shadows. Graphite, clear white candlewax, blue conte crayon and acrylic inks were used for this lively effect. Very wet thick paper and much scribbling and blobbing of stuff.
Good fun,messy,VERY refreshing and free!

She Sleeps Amongst The Orchids

Mixed media painting on wooden panel. This piece measures approx 22cm sq and was created using oil pastels and inks layered over collaged papers and gesso on a wooden panel.
I was so pleased with the atmosphere of this piece-I'm not sure that the photos do it real justice, particularly as it has been sealed with a double layer of gloss varnish which really enriches the colours and texture, but makes it hard to photograph. These were taken on a cloudy day outside so I had as little reflection as possible.
This lovey moody piece is currently for sale in my etsy store-CLICK HERE if you would like to visit!

Tilly's Cats

A change today from my usual posts as it's the weekend. These are little creations by my 8 year-old daughter, which I promised to put on my blog a couple weeks ago as she was so proud of her designs. Paint was blown across the paper for a lovely whiskery effect-just beautiful! I will be putting these in a keepsake frame for sure!

Live Drawing Classes-next update!

As mentioned in previous post-these are the works form last week's drop-in class, using wax resist, combined with wet clay, inks and water-soluble crayons. The two drawings photographed together are from short ten minute poses, and the final piece was around 30 minutes. The model was lovely, very expressive face so I decided to focus on that rather than the whole figure at the end. I like the moody, loose effects that come from working in this way. They have't photograhed all that well i know, but are between A2 and A3 size,so far too big for my scanner!

New Toys!!!

I have to share my latest acquisition today-I'm so pleased with these! These are Letraset Pro permanent marker pens. I have looked longingly at them and wanted to try for some time and finally got a small set as that was the cheapest way to get a range of reasonable shades. After playing with them for an hour I think it's safe to say I will be getting adding more shades to this little lot, they are LOVELY to use.
I was obviously hoping that they would be better than your average felt tip marker, but was not prepared for how beautifully they blend and glide on the paper.
They are double ended so large flat areas can be laid down quickly but the finest lines and delicate work can also be produced with ease. One of the best things I figured is such easy portability, no messy paints or risking breakages in my boxes of precious colour pencils when out and about, these can be slung in a bag and colourful sketches produced with great ease!
I have posted this little drawing here-it was just for fun, so not a perfect piece by any means, but the possibilities are clearly there for some interesting work and I was very pleased with this as a first trial!
It is half term next week so I will be taking them on some outings (weather permitting) and hopefully posting some more intersting results here soon!
